Undergoing Surgery for Mesothelioma

Just as there are no two cases of mesothelioma that are alike, treatments for the rare cancer also varies, depending on the type, location and severity of the disease.

Mesothelioma is rare, only about 3,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. This makes it difficult to operate a large research study comparing the available treatments on the market and finding the right treatment at each of the four cancer stages.

Unfortunately there is no cure for mesothelioma. As a result, the goal of treatment is to reduce the patient's pain, lengthen his or her life expectancy while maintaining a high quality of life.

There are three primary treatments for mesothelioma: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Often at least two of the three traditional treatment options are used together to combat the cancer cells and attempt to slow or stop its growth.

While it's debated among medical professionals which is the best course of treatment, long-term survivors of mesothelioma have usually undergone surgery. Because of the nature of how mesothelioma progresses, a diagnosis isn't usually made until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. In many of these cases, surgery is not an option. There are cases where surgery is recommended, followed by either chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

If your doctor suspects you may have mesothelioma, especially if you have been exposed to asbestos, you'll likely undergo a diagnosic surgery, which involves a biopsy. During a biopsy, a tissue sample of the suspected cancer is removed and studied by a pathologist. This allows your medical staff to make a definitive diagnosis, as well as determine what stage the cancer is at and what treatment may be the best option for you.

If mesothelioma is caught in its early stages of disease, the tumor may still be localized and won't have spread to other organs or parts of the body, making the patient a good candidate for surgery. If the patient is strong and healthy enough, a doctor or oncologist may recommend one of the following aggressive surgical procedures:

Pneumonectomy: This is an aggressive surgery where a cancer patient's diseased lung is surgically removed. A mesothelioma patient who only has the disease in one lung would be a candidate for a pneumonectomy.

Pleurectomy: This surgery involves the removal of the lining of the lungs, or the visceral and parietal pleura, where the disease often originates. This surgery is often performed to remove a build-up of fluid in the lungs.

There are other surgeries that are performed to relieve the symptoms of mesothelioma:

Pleurocentesis: Fluid in the pleural area that surrounds the lungs can make it painful to breathe. This procedure involves the insertion of a needle to drain the fluid and relieve the pain.

Paracentesis: This is a similar procedure utilized to withdraw the fluid surrounding the lungs to make a mesothelioma patient more comfortable.

Pleurodesis: This is a more intensive surgical procedure to reduce or stop the build-up of fluid around the lungs by inserting talc into the pleural area. The talc can stop the fluid from building up and can provide relief for a few years.
