Undergoing Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma

Chemotherapy is often used to treat many types of cancer, and also is used to treat mesothelioma. Using a combination of chemotherapy drugs, these medications kill cancer cells and stop the cells from multiplying.

While there are many chemotherapy drugs on the market, some are more effective than others in treating mesothelioma. Chemotherapy is often used in combination with another traditional cancer therapy, such as surgery or radiation therapy. Chemotherapy often starts after a tumor or tumors have been removed during surgery in an attempt to kill any cancer cells that may still remain.

The science of chemotherapy is forever changing as researchers search for new, experimental drugs to treat and manage mesothelioma and other cancers.

If your doctor has recommended that you undergo chemotherapy treatments, you may be worried about  the side effects of such a treatment regimen. Chemotherapy does have several negative side effects, including hair loss, mouth sores, upset stomach, increased chance of infection, a susceptibility to bruising or bleeding and extreme fatigue. “Chemo brain” is also a side effect of taking chemotherapy drugs, a condition that affects your ability to think clearly, focus on tasks and to remember.

Chemotherapy side effects vary between patients, and it may be comforting to know that most will go away soon after your treatments are over. Some may continue to have lingering effects. Any side effects you experience should be reported to your doctor or medical team, even if they seem to be a common occurrence during chemotherapy treatments. If your doctors are able to treat the side effects right away, it could help to lessen or even stop them completely.

There are several types of chemotherapy drugs used to treat mesothelioma. Here are some of them that are currently on the market:

Alimta: This chemotherapy drug is an injectable and is administered every 21 days. Cancer patients given Alimta are usually given prescriptions for vitamin B12 and folic acid to try to lessen the side effects of this medication. They also are usually given a three-day round of corticosteriods along with each injection to try to combat any potential skin irritations.

Cisplatin: This drug is IV-administered and is often used with other chemotherapy drugs, such as Alimta. If surgery is not an option, Cisplatin is often used.

Carboplatin: The side effects of this drug are mild and fewer than Carboplatin, but it has been shown to interfere with blood cell production within the body.

Gemcitabine: This drug is administered often along with Carboplatin.

Onconase: This drug is showing promise in treating mesothelioma during clinical trials. The drug reportedly kills the cancerous cells while leaving the healthy tissue intact.

Navelbine: This drug is often used with Cisplatin. It is taken orally or given in an IV. It has been found to succesfully reduce cancerous tumors.

Vinorelbine, Mitomycin and Raltitrexed, other types of chemotherapy drugs, are often used along with other drugs, but could be used separately, especially if the chemotherapy patient had difficulty with the combination. Sometimes oncologists have to try different types and combinations of drugs to find out what works best for the patient.
