Managing the Side Effects of Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma Patients:
Nausea/Vomiting, Severe Fatigue and Mouth Sores

It is hard to know what effect chemotherapy will have on a patient's body until the patient is undergoing the actual treatments. Most side effects are only temporary or short term, but some might linger for some time following chemotherapy treatments.

Here are three of the primary side effects reported by mesothelioma patients who undergo chemotherapy and some coping strategies to help during treatment:

Nausea and Vomiting

Even though nausea and vomiting used to be a common side effect years ago during chemotherapy, doctors today can better prevent and ease these symptoms during treatment. Patients are given anti-nausea medications if there is a 10 percent or more risk that the patient will become sick during chemotherapy as a preventive measure. Most chemotherapy patients who become ill during treatment are typically younger patients, rather than the elderly, and women also are at a higher risk than men.

Dexamethasone, a type of steroid, and a serotonin blocker are often the types of anti-nausea medications given to chemotherapy patients. Serotonin blockers stop your body's own serotonin from telling your brain to get sick. Most anti-nausea medications are given within the first 24 hours after the chemotherapy and are continued to be taken for a few days after treatment.

If you do suffer from nausea and vomiting, there are some things you can do to ease your symptoms. Eat and drink slowly. Smaller meals throughout the day are often easier for your body to handle than three larger meals. Try avoiding fatty or sugar-laden foods, or even foods that have strong smells. Make sure you are drinking enough fluids, especially water.

Severe Fatigue

If you are feeling extremely tired following chemotherapy, this is a common side effect. But it's still important to let your doctor know. He or she may want to order a blood test to find out if you are anemic or if there is another underlying reason for your tiredness.

To cope with your extreme exhaustion, try taking several short naps or breaks. Take a short walk or do a light form of exercise. Ask for help with the tasks that tire you out. Your doctor also may have some strategies to help manage your fatigue during chemotherapy.

Mouth Sores

Some types of chemotherapy can cause painful mouth sores, as well as sores in your throat and digestive track lining. These can make it difficult to talk, eat, drink or swallow.

The good news is that once your treatment is over, these sores will disappear. It can help to take care of your mouth and oral health. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and try gargling with warm salt water. Eating ice chips or Popsicles may help ease the pain, as will ibuprofen and acetaminophen. There are other over-the-counter medications, such as Anbesol and Orajel, that can ease your discomfort. Be sure to tell your doctor what you are taking.
