Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, is often diagnosed many decades after the exposure occurred.

There are about 3,000 cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the United States each year. Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for about 10 to 20 percent of those cases.

A membrane or lining within the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum, is made of two sub-layers. The two sub-layers are called the parietal, which surrounds the abdominal cavity, and visceral layers, which surround the organs within the abdominal cavity.

It is believed that peritoneal mesothelioma is caused by asbestos fibers being ingested as they are inhaled. Eventually these fibers end up in the digestive tract and then into the peritoneal membrane. Another theory is that the lymphatic system carries the fibers to the peritoneal membrane.

Once the asbestos fibers reach the peritoneum, they become trapped and the body can't get rid of them. They irritate and cause inflammation of the membrane. Eventually, over time, this causes changes to the cells, which mutate and develop into cancer cells that multiply rapidly.

It could take anywhere from 20 to 50 years for a person to develop symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma. The peritoneum becomes scarred and thick because of the decades of irritation by asbestos fibers. As a result, there is a fluid build-up within the peritoneum. Cancerous tumors then begin to form within this fluid. As the tumors grow, they put pressure on the patient's internal organs.

The symptoms include:

•    Abdominal pain and/or swelling
•    Diarrhea or constipation
•    Lumps under the skin of the abdomen
•    Night sweats or fevers
•    Weight loss
•    Nausea or vomiting
•    Extreme fatigue
•    Anemia

It can take awhile until the symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma begin to be noticed and a diagnosis is made. As a result, the rare cancer is often found during a late-stage of this disease.

There are some treatment options available. An oncologist may recommend removing the tumor or tumors, but this is usually only an option if the cancer is found during an early stage. Since it is often found at a late stage, surgery may involve removing portions of the tumor. Chemotherapy may be combined with surgery or used alone to attempt to shrink the cancerous tumors and slow down its growth.

Radiation treatments are usually not recommended for this form of mesothelioma because of the location of several nearby vital organs.

If you suspect you may have peritoneal mesothelioma, it's important to discuss this possibility with your doctor, especially if you've been exposed to asbestos.
