How Mesothelioma Develops
Mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, often develops and spreads differently from other types of cancers. Rather than forming a cancerous tumor, mesothelioma often spreads along the pleural lining and presses against other organs, including those in the abdomen, but especially the lungs. As the cancer grows within the pleural lining, it eventually hardens around the lungs, making it difficult for someone with mesothelioma to breathe deeply. This is one of the many symptoms of mesothelioma that patients first notice, even though the cancer had been developing for decades after the exposure to asbestos occurred.
Mesothelioma often doesn’t spread extensively to other organs. Instead, it tends to remain within the abdominal cavity, affecting mostly the chest and lungs before it may spread to other distant organs, but this often occurs in the late stages of the cancer.

If mesothelioma is detected early enough, and it remains within the pleural lining, it is possible that the cancer could be cured if the entire tumor can be surgically removed. This is rare, since mesothelioma is often detected much later, when symptoms become noticeable. At this point in the course of the disease, the pleural lining is filled with the cancer, and mesothelioma has likely spread to other areas. More than two-thirds of all cases of mesothelioma develop within the pleural lining which surrounds the lungs. This type of cancer is often referred to as pleural mesothelioma. The rest of the cases of the disease usually develop within the patient’s abdominal cavity lining, and are called peritoneal mesothelioma. In very rare cases, mesothelioma can develop around the heart or a patient’s reproductive organs.

Mesothelioma is a complex cancer that is affected by many different factors. The primary cause of the disease is direct exposure to asbestos, but there are documented cases in which patients have contracted the disease through a secondary exposure. The most common way that mesothelioma patients were exposed to asbestos is through a workplace. Many types of occupations, especially those that are construction- or industrial-related, have a documented history of having employees exposed to different levels of asbestos. It isn’t until much later, anywhere from 20 to 50 years later, that the patient may start to exhibit symptoms of the disease caused by asbestos exposure early in their working life. It may take three to six months after a patient’s first consultation before the disease is diagnosed. Usually the patient’s primary doctor will start the diagnostic process, and then the patient will be sent to a pulmonologist or oncologist for further diagnostic testing.
