Extrapleural Pneumonectomy: A Treatment for Mesothelioma

While it may not be an option for most mesothelioma patients, an extrapleural pneumonectomy is a serious surgical procedure that is performed on patients diagnosed in the early stages of mesothelioma. During this early stage of the cancer, the cancer has not spread yet from the pleural lining to the surrounding lymph nodes and other nearby organs. Since most mesothelioma patients aren’t diagnosed until the later stages of the disease, many are not considered to be candidates for this intensive surgery. During an extrapleural pneumonectomy, one of the mesothelioma patient’s lungs, as well as the linings of the chest and heart, diaphragm and nearby lymph nodes are removed. The surgery is performed as a treatment for pleural mesothelioma. It can help stop or slow the spread of the cancerous tumors associated with pleural mesothelioma.

The surgery can help make breathing easier and improve the quality of life for patients that undergo the procedure. Some may even be able to return to their normal lives and may even continue to work. During the surgery, much of the cancer is removed, which can lengthen the life expectancy of the patient. When this surgery is combined with other traditional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, it can provide the patient with additional months or even years on their life. This procedure was initially used back in the 1940s as a treatment for tuberculosis. The surgery was far from perfect at that time; it had a high mortality rate. Since that time, the procedure has been refined, and the surgical tools and technology has improved.A prime candidate for this type of surgery would have the cancerous tissue located in just one lung, not both.

Recovery from this type of invasive surgery is a slow process. A respirator is often used to assist the patient in breathing the first few days after surgery. Drainage tubes are utilized so any access fluid is drained and doesn’t build up within the patient’s chest. A patient who undergoes this procedure is closely monitored to make sure there aren’t any complications that develop, which can happen with this type of major surgery.   Recovery often takes at least six to eight weeks, but is usually much longer. Patients are advised to take things slowly during their recovery, and get plenty of rest in the days, weeks and months following the procedure as the remaining lung grows accustomed to taking over 100 percent of the lung functions for the patient.
