Understanding Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare, aggressive type of cancer that infiltrates the thin membrane, called the mesothelium, that protects your lungs, heart and other organs.

The disease is most often caused by exposure to asbestos; however, the exposure may have occurred many decades ago. Most patients don't realize they have cancer until the symptoms begin to appear. Symptoms don't often appear until at least 20 years after the asbestos exposure, but can even go undiagnosed for 30, 40 or 50 years.

Unfortunately, most cancer treatments aren't effective in treating mesothelioma. The cancer can't be cured yet, but there are some treatment options that can at least provide pain relief and improve a patient's quality of life.

While the slow-growing cancer can take decades to develop before symptoms begin to appear, there are some early warning signs of mesothelioma.

Those early symptoms can include coughing, shortness of breath, tiredness or fatigue and a reduced lung capacity. Since asbestos exposure is the leading cause of mesothelioma, it's important to let your doctor know that you've been exposed to asbestos so he or she recognizes that mesothelioma could be the reason you're feeling unwell.

While the most common forms of the disease affects the lining of the lungs or abdominal cavity, there  are four types: pleural, pericardial, testicular and peritoneal mesothelioma.

More than 75 percent of mesothelioma patients suffer from pleural mesothelioma, found within the lining of the lungs, called the pleura. This is often where the disease originates.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

•    Dry, persistent cough
•    Chest pain
•    Swallowing difficulties
•    Fever and/or night sweats
•    Tiredness
•    Shortness of breath

Peritoneal mesothelioma is diagnosed in about 10 to 20 percent of mesothelioma cases. It grows within the abdomen lining.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

•    Abdominal pain
•    Swelling of the stomach
•    Loss of weight
•    Upset stomach and vomiting
•    Constipation or diarrhea
•    Tiredness or general fatigue.

Pericardial mesothelioma is diagnosed in about 1 percent of mesothelioma cases. It occurs in the exterior lining of the heart.

Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include:

•    Difficulty breathing
•    Chest pains
•    Irregular heartbeat
•    Coughing
•    Night sweats and fever
•    Tiredness or a general fatigue

Testicular mesothelioma is relatively uncommon, diagnosed in less than 1 percent of mesothelioma patients. This form of the disease is found within the lining of the testes. Since mesothelioma is so rare and testicular mesothelioma is even more rare, the range of symptoms have been difficult to define. This form of the disease often includes the swelling of the scrotum and testicular lumps.
