Diagnosing Your Mesothelioma

If a doctor recently informed you that you have mesothelioma, you probably have many questions and worries.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, most often caused by asbestos exposure many years ago. If your doctor suspects you may have the disease, he or she will likely order one or more tests to make an accurate diagnosis, determine the severity of the disease and come up with treatment options that would be best for you.

Your doctor may order a CT-Scan, MRI, radionuclide scanning, a biopsy or tissue sample or a combination of these procedures to determine a diagnosis.

CT Scan

A CT scan, or computed tomography scan, is often considered the best non-invasive imaging tool used to see mesothelioma tumors, especially if they are found in the lining of your lungs or abdominal cavity, the most common locations for the disease to form. CT scans can produce images that are sharper and clearer than most x-rays. They can provide a better view inside your body than other types of imaging technology.

Your oncologist could order a MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, another type of imaging machine used to view detailed images of your internal organs.

Radionuclide scanning

Radionuclide scanning can show whether mesothelioma has spread to your other organs. During this procedure, you will swallow or receive an injection of a substance with mildly radioactive material, which allows the scanner to detect abnormal areas within your internal organs. A bone scan is another form of radionuclide scanning used to find out if mesothelioma has spread to your bones. The radioactive material is injected into your bloodstream and will collect in bones that have unusual bone growths, which could indicate bone cancer. A scanner machine measures these areas and the images are recorded on x-rays for your oncologist to read.

During a biopsy procedure, a surgeon will take a tissue sample of the suspected cancer tumors to determine whether mesothelioma cells are present. If they are, then it will be a definitive diagnosis. A pathologist will look the samples under a microscope and through this analysis will determine the severity of the cancer. A biopsy also can rule out mesothelioma, if the mesothelioma cells are not present in the tissue sample.

Mediastinoscopy and mediastinotomy procedures measure whether the mesothelioma tumors have spread to your lymph nodes. During a mediastinoscopy, a scope is inserted into your chest to take a tissue sample of the lymph nodes. During a mediastinotomy procedure, the scope is inserted through a neck incision, also to sample the lymph nodes. The patient usually receives general anesthesia for these procedures.

Once you've been through the procedures for diagnosis of the disease, your oncologist will determine the severity or stage of your cancer. This depends on the size of the tumors, how many lymph nodes are affected and how far the cancer has spread.
