What Causes Mesothelioma?

Most people who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos, the primary cause of the cancer.

Asbestos is a group of minerals used in certain products, including building materials and vehicle brake pads, that are resistant to heat and corrosion. Breathing in asbestos fibers can cause various forms of mesothelioma and other health risks. The fibers are so small that they can be undetectable when floating in the air.

Often mesothelioma patients inhaled asbestos fibers while working in construction, manufacturing or other general industries. They often are exposed during construction or demolition of older buildings that were constructed using materials containing asbestos. Others were exposed to asbestos during military service, such as in the U.S. Navy.

The government has linked between 70 percent to 80 percent of mesothelioma cases to an exposure to asbestos on the job site. There is some evidence to indicate that family members of mesothelioma patients could have an increased risk of developing the cancer or another asbestos-related disease. One theory is that asbestos fibers may have been brought home from a work site on the person's clothing or body. Mesothelioma has been linked to residents who live close to mining sites where asbestos minerals were being extracted. Some mesothelioma patients have had no known exposure to asbestos.

It doesn't take a lengthy exposure to asbestos in a lifetime in order to cause mesothelioma, but it often takes decades to realize that the damage has been done. Being exposed for less than one or two months to asbestos fibers can result in a mesothelioma diagnosis 20 to even 50 or more years later.

There are lesser common causes of mesothelioma. They include:

Radiation. Until the 1950s, doctors used radiation in high doses for some types of chest x-rays, resulting in a few published cases of mesothelioma. The chemical thorium dioxide had been used in some of those chest and abdomenal x-rays.

Zeolites. Zeolites are a naturally-occurring mineral similar to asbestos. A related mineral, erionite, is commonly found in soil in some areas of Turkey and is believed to have contributed to higher rates of mesothelioma in those areas.

SV40 virus. The simian virus 40 may be a contributing factor in mesothelioma, according to studies conducted on laboratory animals. Polio vaccines contaminated with SV40 between 1955 and 1963 may have exposed 30 million Americans to the virus. So far, the contaminated vaccines haven't been linked to mesothelioma in humans. Studies have found that people who have been exposed to asbestos and came into contact with the SV40 virus were more likely to contract mesothelioma, but the relationship between the cancer and virus aren't completely understood yet.

Genetics. It is believed that genetics may play a factor in the development of mesothelioma in some families.

Another factor associated with mesothelioma is smoking. The combination of smoking and asbestos exposure has been linked to significantly higher risks for mesothelioma.
