Treatments for Mesothelioma

If you've been recently diagnosed with mesothelioma, your doctor or oncologist will likely recommend one or more types of treatments to fight this type of rare cancer. Often a treatment plan will include a combination of three traditional treatment routes in order to attempt to aggressively fight the cancer.

Treatments may include:

Surgery. The surgical removal of the cancerous tumor or affected tissues, including lymph nodes, is often used to treat mesothelioma, depending on how far the disease has spread. It could involve the surgical removal of a portion or the entire lung, a procedure called a pneumonectomy. Since mesothelioma is found in the pleura, or the chest and abdomen lining, a pleurectomy may be performed to remove the lining and surrounding affected tissue.

If your doctor suspects that you may have mesothelioma, you may be asked to undergo a diagnostic surgery to confirm whether you have cancer and what stage of cancer it is. A biopsy, in which a tissue sample is taken from the cancerous site, is taken and examined by a pathologist.

Radiation. Radiation treatments work to shrink tumors and, hopefully, kill all the cancer cells, through a series of treatments. Radiation is often used in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy and can help ease the pain of cancer.

Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy treatments use toxic drugs to kill the cancer cells. You could receive chemotherapy treatments through injections through the bloodstream or within the pleural cavity, or by ingesting them in pill form. Chemotherapy attacks cells that rapidly divide, a characteristic of cancer cells, but also other healthy cells, such as hair follicles. This is why chemotherapy patients often lose their hair during treatments. Chemotherapy often reduces the tumor size and can slow or stop its spread to other organs. Chemotherapy also can extend a cancer patient's life expectancy.

Mesothelioma can often cause pain, so an important aspect of any treatment plan should include pain control. If you are experiencing pain caused by the cancer, talk to your doctor or oncologist about pain management treatments. There are many different types of pain medications and non-medicinal methods of pain control. Pain is not something you should have to accept as part of your life. When you are pain-free, it allows you to resume your normal activities and interests, and maintain your quality of life.

No matter what treatment or treatments you and your doctor decide are right for you, it's important that you have a good support system, family, friends or both, who are there for you during your cancer journey.
