Pleural Mesothelioma

There are several different types of mesothelioma, depending on where the cancer is located within your body. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the rare cancer, discovered in the soft tissue that surrounds the lungs called the pleura or pleural membrane.

While mesothelioma can manifest itself throughout the body, about 75 percent of the time the cancer begins in the pleura. The pleura is the soft tissue membrane that protects certain organs and your body cavities.

Pleural mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos fibers, often while on the job. Victims are often exposed to the microscopic fibers when they unintentionally inhale them while working in some sort of industry or blue collar profession. Since asbestos exposure often happens in industries dominated by male employees, about 80 percent of mesothelioma patients are men.

When the needle-like asbestos fibers are inhaled, they end up in the lungs and find their way to the pleural membrane. It's very difficult for the body to rid itself of these fibers, which remain in the membrane and cause scarring and chronic inflammation. It also can cause pleural mesothelioma.

Over several decades of the victim's life, the asbestos causes the pleural cells to mutate. If those cells mutate into cancer, they can divide at a fast rate, creating tumors that reduce a victim's ability to breathe by crowding the lungs and reducing lung capacity. The tumors also cause the build-up of excess fluid within the pleural layers, which is painful and makes it hard to breathe.

Sadly, the prognosis for someone diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma is not good. Most of the time a person won't know that he has mesothelioma until he feels the symptoms. At that point, the cancer is usually at an advanced stage and surgery is likely not an option. If diagnosed early, there are more options, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, or a combination of two or more of these treatments. This can improve a patient's ability to fight the cancer and lengthen his life expectancy.

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma can include any of the following:

•    Persistent dry cough
•    Coughing up blood
•    Shortness of breath
•    Pain in the lower back or ribs
•    Pain when breathing
•    Lumps found under the skin on the chest
•    Problems with swallowing
•    Night sweats or fevers
•    Weight loss that can't be explained
•    Extreme fatigue

If you or a family member may have been exposed to asbestos, even if it was 20 to 50 years ago, and exhibit any of these symptoms, it's important to share this information with your doctor. The earlier that pleural mesothelioma is diagnosed, the better the outlook for the patient.
