Pericardial Mesothelioma

There are four common types of mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma is one of the rarest forms of the cancer. The heart is surrounded by a thin membrane, called the pericardium. Within this membrane is where pericardial mesothelioma develops.

This form of mesothelioma is so rare that there are only about 200 documented cases.

While all types of mesothelioma are able to be traced back to asbestos exposure, there is more ambiguity surrounding how these inhaled asbestos fibers, which are microscopic, make their way around the heart. The other forms of mesothelioma are more clear cut. The asbestos fibers in most cases of mesothelioma remain in the pleura, or the membrane surrounding the lungs, causing pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is twice as likely to strike men as women, and most often these men are diagnosed with the rare but aggressive cancer between 50 to 70 years of age. Mesothelioma takes decades, often 10 to 50 years, before the patient starts exhibiting symptoms and a diagnosis is reached. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is often diagnosed at a late stage of the disease and treatment options are limited.

Treatments could include surgery, if the tumor isn't inoperable and the patient is healthy enough to endure the procedure; chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these treatments.

Life expectancy for a pericardial mesothelioma patient is often poor, given the advanced stage that the cancer is found. About half of patients diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma don't live longer than six months.

It can be difficult to properly diagnose pericardial mesothelioma because as the cancer is developing, the symptoms often are similar to those of other heart-related conditions. The heart-related symptoms associated with this form of cancer are most often caused by the build-up of fluid within the membrane and the thickening of the membrane layers.

Pericardial mesothelioma symptoms include:

•    Irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations
•    Heart murmurs
•    Chest pains
•    A dry, persistent cough
•    Difficulty breathing, even when not physically active or lying down
•    Severe fatigue
•    Night sweats and/or fever

The cancer develops when asbestos fibers become stuck in the pericardial membrane surrounding the heart. The body has a difficult time ridding itself of the needle-like fibers, and they can remain lodged in the membranes. Over time, the fibers can contribute to the development of cancerous cells that grow rapidly within the pericardium, creating tumors.

If you or someone close to you is exhibiting any of these symptoms, it should be discussed with a doctor, especially if there is a known asbestos exposure decades earlier. A doctor often may recommend an x-ray or CT scan.
