Testicular Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, and of the four most common types of the disease, the rarest type is testicular mesothelioma. There have been less than 100 reported cases of testicular mesothelioma.

As with all forms of mesothelioma, the disease develops in a membranous lining surrounding an organ or organs. Testicular mesothelioma forms in the lining that surrounds the testicles, called the tunica vaginalis.

Testicular mesothelioma is so rare that a widely recognized set of symptoms for this type of cancer hasn't been developed. However, in most of the few reported cases of testicular mesothelioma, patients reported lumps on the testicles and swelling in the scrotum.

Testicular mesothelioma is usually a secondary site for the cancer. The primary tumor is often located within the peritoneum, or the membrane that surrounds the abdominal cavity. Testicular mesothelioma often involves the surgical removal of a portion of or the entire testicle. Surgery is often followed up with either chemotherapy or radiation in an attempt to kill or stop the growth of any remaining cancerous cells.

Since testicular mesothelioma is usually a secondary site for mesothelioma, doctors must also treat the peritoneal mesothelioma, too. Both forms of mesothelioma are fast-multiplying and aggressive cancers. Even when chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is used following surgery, testicular mesothelioma has been known to return a few years later, spreading to other areas of the body, including the lungs, chest, brain and lymph nodes.

The life expectancy for a patient diagnosed with this form of cancer is less than two years.

Very little is known about how testicular mesothelioma develops. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they enter the body and become trapped in the the membranous linings surrounding many organs, and in rare cases, the testicles. The fibers, stuck in the membrane, start to cause infections and inflammation, resulting in scarring. This creates an environment ripe for the development of mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this cancer, and occurs in the chest. Testicular mesothelioma can strike men at any age, although it's typically diagnosed in men who are 50 years or older. Men who worked in industrial or construction jobs are more susceptible to contracting mesothelioma, since they have a greater chance of coming into contact with asbestos in the workplace.

Mesothelioma is often not diagnosed until anywhere from 10 to 50 years after a patient was exposed to asbestos, usually at a work site. There have been some reported cases of secondhand exposure to asbestos by family members who may have inhaled asbestos fibers brought into the home on the clothing of a family member.
