Veterans Diagnosed With Mesothelioma

Many veterans learn many decades after their years of military service that they've developed mesothelioma, a direct result of exposure to asbestos while serving in the military.

This country's veterans have put their lives on the line time and time again, on the battlefront and on military bases throughout the world, both in times of war and during peacetime. They serve in all branches of the military, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

Unfortunately, of all the demographics affected by mesothelioma, U.S. Veterans have been affected the most by this rare and deadly form of cancer.

The reason for their increased risk of contracting mesothelioma is because many have been exposed to asbestos during their military service. Asbestos is the only known cause of the rare lung cancer. Asbestos is resistant to heat and corrosion, making it the perfect material to use for many years by the military in hundreds of products and construction materials.

Because asbestos exposure couldn't be avoided for many veterans who served our country, mesothelioma has become a major critical illness diagnosed in veterans, especially those veterans who served between World War II and the Vietnam War.

Ship-building was a strong industry during and after World War II. About 4.3 million Americans worked in shipyards, causing them to be at great risk for developing mesothelioma anywhere from two to five decades following their exposure.

Navy veterans are at the highest risk of developing mesothelioma because asbestos was so widely used on Naval ships and in shipyards for a variety of products and construction materials. On board a Naval ship, a sailor would have been exposed to high levels of asbestos throughout the ship, including the boiler rooms, engine rooms and even their sleeping quarters. Those who were tasked to build and repair ships were more likely to inhale asbestos fibers. These men worked in the trades as plumbers, mechanics, shopfitters, electricians, welders, pipefitters and boilermakers, among other trades.

There have been rare instances where secretaries who served on military bases developed malignant mesothelioma through secondary exposure of asbestos. Secondary exposure occurs when a person inhales asbestos fibers from the hair and clothing of another person who worked directly with the toxic asbestos dust. Spouses and other family members have been found to develop mesothelioma because of secondary exposure.

Mesothelioma has a lengthy latency period, so veterans who served our country during the 1950s through the 1970s are now being diagnosed with the cancer. At a time when they would expect to enjoy retirement, many of these brave men and women are discovering that they developed cancer as a result of asbestos exposure during their military service.

The prognosis for a mesothelioma patient is not good; most die within a year after diagnosis. If the disease is caught during its early stages, there are more treatment options.
